Description published by Couch & Romney in Mycologia 65: 251 (1973) under the invalid name 'Lagenidium giganteum Couch, 1935, emend. Couch' [see Art. 40.1, 40.3; Note 2]. [Note: the here designated holotype was previously included within an ineffective 'lectotypification' by Dick (Straminipilous Fungi, p. 297. 2001) [as figs 1-14 (1935) (iconotype)] of 'Lagenidium giganteum J.N. Couch' [Art. 33.1 as applied in 2001] that included elements of at least two gatherings in two USA states and most notably Fig. 2 on a different host, i.e., Daphnia from Virginia]. Epitype (here designated): ATCC 36492 [frozen] isolated by C.J. Umphlett & C.S. Huang in May 1969 from living, infected Culex sp. larva, [interpreted as originating from either Blackwood Station or University Lake], Orange County, North Carolina, USA [as Lagenidium sp. in Umphlett & Huang. 1972.     Holotype Specifically Fig. 1 published by Couch in Mycologia 27: 377 (1935) under the name 'Lagenidium giganteum' [nom. invalid. viz. Art. 39.1], growth on infected Culex sp. larva [det. in 2015 from illustration by B. Sinclair], Chapel Hill, NC, USA.
